Some Helpful Tips from a Seasoned Video Pro

Your Wedding Video Isn't Just For You. If you have any doubts at all about taping your event, think beyond your own feelings to those of family and friends who may truly enjoy seeing the event now and in the years to come...parents, grandparents, people too far away or too ill to attend. Your wedding video is the perfect time capsule of everyone with you and all the things you'll do to celebrate your special occasion. It's fun to look back years from that day at the kids who are all grown up now, and, perhaps more importantly, the elders that may have since passed on.

Videography or Photography? Do both if you can, of course, but if it comes down to a choice think of it this way: If you had to choose the way you wanted to remember your grandparents' wedding would you do so by choosing to look at a photograph or watching a video? Both have a place: a photo may spark a memory. A well produced video recalls an entire event. What choice will you give your own grandchildren?

A Personal Experience.  In my own case, when my wife and I were married I was a public school teacher trying to save money in every way possible on our wedding expenses. A friend took the photographs and a relative volunteered to tape the ceremony and reception. Sounded good to us, right up to the time when we got the photos and tape. When we saw the results there wasn't a single picture of my sister and the wedding tape was missing the cake cutting and bouquet toss.  Looking back, I wish we had made a different decision.

It wasn't until our 20th wedding anniversary renewal of vows that things got done right by hiring a professional videographer from my own company and a photographer with a long established business in our community.

How Much do you Want? How Little Will You Settle For?  Saving money by having a friend or relative tape your event instead of an experienced wedding videographer may sound very attractive and may fit better into your budget until you see how little you like the results, and if you don't like it you can't really consider that you've saved any money; on the contrary, you've wasted it, because chances are good that you won't watch it much less show it to other people. I learned this lesson the hard way with my own wedding video which has sat in a file drawer unseen for years and years. I just don't want to keep reminding myself of the mistake I made.

It Depends on Who You Hire. You would think that anyone who charges you to tape your special event would have the basics under control...framing, focusing, exposing and following the action properly, at the very least, but don't count on it. The quality of the results depends on the skill of the videographer, how much he's invested in his tools and how well he uses them. It also depends on the quality of the camera, and we're not even talking yet about creativity. That's a whole other topic. So is editing.

The Meaning of Experience. If you had something as important as heart surgery to face, would you shop for the least expensive surgeon you could find or would you prefer the one with the most experience in heart surgery? Think of your wedding video in a similar way. Your video is going to be an important part of your personal family history. Spend what you need to get something of quality. Yes, it's true, experience costs more , but it's your guarantee that the results won't be disappointing. Few things feel as bad as knowing that you've wasted your money on something you can't enjoy. So if you pay more for experience and the feeling of confidence that it generates, consider your money well spent on a good investment.

Look at the Evidence.  We've filled our site with many beautiful, high definition (HD) demos from real wedding ceremonies and receptions for you to watch. I hope you'll take the time to watch some of them, particularly if it's your venue. Video demos are the best way you have to become acquainted with the nuance's of a videographer's work and style. You don't have to know anything technical about how the video was made, you only have to know whether or not you like what you're seeing. It's more of an emotional thing. If you do like it, you've found the right video production company for your event.

Check the Record. Both the videographer's and editor's experience matters a lot, not only in how much you're going to enjoy the results, but in how smoothly the videographer is going to get the job done for you. 24KT Sound & Video has been in the video production business for 30 years.
